As summer weather draws to an end, it saddens me to think there will be less warm nights when the perfect dessert is a cup of gelato from Pazzo in Silverlake. I discovered Pazzo on my hunt for the best Gelato in Los Angeles, and while there are a couple other decent spots (such as Gelato Bar in Studio City), I have decided after many, many, many visits that Pazzo is by far the best gelato in Los Angeles. Not only do they use fresh organic ingredients that often come from the local farmer's market, but they have such unique flavors that change daily and can range from peach sorbet (with real local organic peaches) to chocolate covered pretzel-YUM. One must be careful not to get too attached to any one flavor as it could be a few weeks or more before you see it again, especially if it is as popular as the chocolate covered pretzel.
I typically go after dinner and will get a few pints to take home in hope that they'll last me for the week. I love the browned butter, and there often variations, such as brown buttered banana with nuts or brown buttered cinnamon. I also love the marscarpone and the peanut butter and jelly. There is a lightness and freshness to their gelatos- something you NEVER have in the artificial frozen yogurt places that seem to be popping up left and right. They also have a selection of baked goods from Susina Bakery that I have yet to try but could make for a nice brownie a la mode if you were in the mood.
The line tends to get very long on weekend nights, but its all part of the experience, as are the weirdo hipster/goths who sit outside smoking cigarettes and listening to the rather obnoxious music that plays. But again, you can't get better gelato...maybe anywhere.
